October 2026

Hi, Folks!

Did you know October is National Book Month? Neither did I until a librarian in Ohio told me last week – and then handed me three books I had no business leaving without. That is how it always goes.

I did something last month I had not done in far too long: I walked into a bookstore with no list, no deadline and nowhere to be. Just wandered the aisles and picked up whatever cover grabbed me. An hour of pure browsing. If it has been a while for you, I highly recommend it – there is a kind of joy in the hunt that no algorithm can hand you.

So, what are you reading? Anything you’d like me to check out? I’ve had a ton of friends and family either recommend or send me great things to read. And MANY THANKS to those of you who send me books and manuscripts. I love hearing about people’s favorite books!

Among the longer titles I enjoyed this past month were The People’s Historian: The Outsized Life of Howard Zinn by Dave Zirin, The Nightingales by Emil Wilson, The Man Who Stole the Gods by Matthew Campbell and The Infinite State by Richard Swan.

And a standing request for the young adult authors out there: keep bringing the hope. Every teen title below was picked because it leaves a young reader lighter than it found them. They can get gloom anywhere.

Anyhow, enjoy this month’s book selections below. I hope you are all reading some wonderful books. Make sure to tell me all about them. If you're an author or a publisher and would like to send me review copies of your book(s), please send them to the address listed for authors and publishers.
